(RxWiki News) The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new medication for a certain type of constipation.

This new approval is called Pizensy (lactitol).

The FDA approved it to treat chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults. This type of constipation is one in which the cause is unknown. This is known as “idiopathic.”

“The approval of Pizensy represents a major step forward in treatment options for CIC,” said Dr. Jack A. Di Palma, past president of the American College of Gastroenterology and professor at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, according to Markets Insider. “Pizensy will be the only FDA approved product which the patient can self-titrate based on their own results for stool consistency.”

This medication is available as a powder to be mixed with any liquid to form a solution. The mixture is then taken once daily with a meal.

Lactitol may affect how other medications are absorbed in the body. If you are taking other medications by mouth, health professionals recommend that you take your other medications at least two hours before or two hours after you take lactitol.

This medication works by drawing water into the small intestine, which then leads to a laxative effect. Common side effects of lactitol may include upper respiratory infections, gas, diarrhea, stomach distention and increased blood pressure.

If you experience loose stools that continue for a long time, stop taking this medication and speak with your health care provider immediately.

Pizensy is expected to be available later this year, according to the FDA.
