(RxWiki News) The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new medication to treat cancer of the bladder and urinary tract.
It’s called Imfinzi (durvalumab). The FDA approved it to treat cancer that has spread to other parts of the body or cannot be removed by surgery. Imfinzi was approved for use in those who have tried chemotherapy with platinum that is no longer working or did not work.
Durvalumab works to treat cancer of the bladder and urinary tract by working with the immune system, according to the FDA. It’s available as an injection and is to be administered by a health care professional.
Commonly reported side effects include feeling very tired, muscle and/or bone pain, constipation, decreased appetite and nausea. Durvalumab may cause serious side effects like problems in the lungs, liver, intestines, kidneys and skin.
Also, durvalumab is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It could harm the baby, the FDA reported.
AstraZeneca manufactures Imfinzi.
